Shingle List Prices Haven't Budged Since June. So Why Do Utah Roof Bids Feel Higher in October?

Industry figures below were re-checked the morning of Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, from manufacturer letters posted on distributor hubs, the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics producer price series via FRED. Manufacturer freight amounts are not NuRoof customer prices. Diesel and PPI moves do not automatically equal a higher shingle list price.
If you got a few roof replacement quotes around Northern Utah this fall, you may have heard a version of the same line: “Materials went up again.” Sometimes the bid is simply higher than what a neighbor paid in the spring. The confusing part is that the big list-price bulletins for residential steep-slope shingles that distributors still circulate are the early-summer ones — for example, GAF’s May 8, 2026 letter setting residential product increases for shipments on or after June 1, 2026. October’s distributor hubs are full of something else: freight and transportation surcharges.
That distinction matters. List price is what a manufacturer publishes for the product. A freight surcharge is what it charges to move a truckload or shipment. Contractors and distributors pass logistics costs through in different ways. None of those manufacturer letters is a homeowner price list for Davis or Weber County — and The NuRoof Guys will not invent one.
What actually changed in October (verified)
Distributor announcement pages for October 2026 — including Gulfeagle Supply’s October hub — list freight letters, not a new round of asphalt-shingle list hikes. As of this writing, those letters include:
- GAF (residential). In a Sept. 25, 2026 letter, GAF says it will increase the freight surcharge to $500 per shipment on all residential orders, effective Oct. 5, 2026. The letter attributes the move to higher transportation costs, “including higher freight rates and a 35% increase in diesel fuel prices over the past month.” That 35% diesel line is GAF’s own claim in its letter — it is not an EIA calculation, and it is not a claim about shingle list prices.
- CertainTeed (residential roofing). In a Sept. 18, 2026 letter, CertainTeed sets a full-truckload (FTL) transportation surcharge of $500 per truckload for shipments on or after Oct. 1, 2026. The letter reminds customers the surcharge is indexed to the EIA U.S. national average on-highway diesel price, with published tiers (for example, $5.51–$6.25 → $500 / FTL; $6.26–$7.00 → $600 / FTL), and that the tier adjusts after the national average sits above or below a band for a sustained 30 days.
- IKO. In a Sept. 22, 2026 letter effective Oct. 5, 2026, IKO’s standard-truck freight surcharge is $500 nationally. For Utah (grouped with Colorado, Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming), the standard-truck rate is $550. Larger truck classes are higher. That Utah-tier line is why “national average” freight talk understates what some Utah deliveries carry.
- Atlas (two different letters). Atlas’s Shingles, Underlayments & Ventilation letter (dated Sept. 15, posted for a Sept. 21, 2026 effective date) sets a $500 per truckload freight surcharge and cites DOE diesel at $6.285 that week. Separately, the October Gulfeagle hub also links an Atlas letter (Sept. 19) from what appears to be its roof and wall insulation business (the letter’s contact address is atlasrwi.com), raising that business’s freight surcharge to $600 per truckload effective Oct. 19, 2026. That second letter does not appear to cover shingles, so do not treat it as an asphalt-shingle list increase.
Gulfeagle’s own October note on that hub is “no price increase at this time.” The vendor letters above are about moving product, not rewriting June’s list schedule.
Diesel eased off its late-September spike — and that still isn’t your shingle sticker
EIA’s Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update (diesel release dated Oct. 14, 2026) shows U.S. on-highway diesel at:
- $6.529 for the week of Sept. 21, 2026
- $6.199 for the week of Oct. 5, 2026
- $6.179 for the week of Oct. 12, 2026
So diesel cooled from the late-September print that showed up in some manufacturer letters. That is useful context for CertainTeed’s published tiers, and it is a reminder that oil or diesel is not automatic causation for a higher shingle list price. Correlation is not a price hike. Freight letters can cite diesel even while list prices stay where they were in June.
What the asphalt-shingle PPI says (and what it doesn’t)
The Bureau of Labor Statistics producer price index for asphalt shingle and coating materials manufacturing (PCU324122324122, via FRED) was updated Oct. 15, 2026:
- September 2026: 370.379
- August 2026: 377.255
- January 2026: 348.649
September eased from August’s reading. From January to September the index is still higher than it started the year — about 6.2% using those three prints — but a producer index is not a Utah homeowner bid, and it is not permission to invent local square prices. Treat PPI as a factory-gate temperature check, not a quote.
Why a Utah bid can still feel higher when “list” looks flat
When The NuRoof Guys walk a Northern Utah roof — Ogden, Layton, Kaysville, Farmington, Clinton, Riverdale, and nearby communities — the number on a replacement proposal is rarely “shingle list × squares” alone. A bid also reflects:
- Delivery and staging. Manufacturer freight surcharges land on distributors and contractors first. How (or whether) they show up on your proposal varies by company and by load.
- Labor, access, and scope. Steep pitches, multiple stories, tear-off layers, decking repairs, ice-and-water shield, ventilation, and disposal all move the total more than a list bulletin does.
- What the roof actually needs. A sound roof with limited wear is a different job than a roof with functional damage, failed pipe boots, or hail history. See why Northern Utah asphalt roofs age faster and questions to ask a Utah roofing contractor — without turning freight news into a sales emergency.
- Insurance timing. After hail or wind, documentation and coverage questions affect when work happens, not what a manufacturer’s freight letter says. Use our Utah homeowners insurance roof checklist as questions for your agent, not as coverage advice. The NuRoof Guys are not an insurance agency.
So if June’s shingle list looks quiet and October’s freight letters do not, both can be true at once. The homeowner question is still: what does this roof need, at this address, with this scope?
Repair · Restore · Replace — after the story
The NuRoof Guys sort every asphalt roof into one of three paths. Rejuvenation with GoNano’s NuRoof treatments is only for sound asphalt roofs with no functional damage — it is not right for every roof, and it is not a fix for active leaks or storm damage that needs repair or replacement first.
- Repair when a specific failure (pipe boot, flashing, a few damaged shingles) is the problem.
- Restore when the roof is a candidate for rejuvenation as one step in a maintenance plan — not a promise to make an old roof new.
- Replace when the roof is at the end of a safe service life or damage is beyond repair/restore.

Stay off the roof. Have valleys, two-story gutters, and debris cleared by someone set up to do it safely. From the ground, look for missing tabs, cracked pipe boots, and stains in the attic — then get a licensed inspection before you decide.
Quick answers
Have asphalt shingle list prices gone up again in October 2026?
The October distributor hubs we checked are posting freight/transportation surcharge letters (GAF, CertainTeed, IKO, and Atlas freight notices), not a new steep-slope list-price round. Verified residential list-increase letters still point to early summer (for example, GAF shipments on or after June 1, 2026).
Why does IKO charge Utah more for freight?
IKO’s Oct. 5, 2026 schedule lists Utah with several other states at a higher standard-truck surcharge ($550 vs $500 nationally). That is a manufacturer freight schedule, not a NuRoof customer price.
Does cheaper diesel this week mean my roof bid will drop?
Not automatically. EIA diesel eased from late September into mid-October, and CertainTeed’s surcharge is tiered to diesel over a sustained period. Freight is only one input. Ask for a written scope on your roof.
Is roof restoration a way around high replacement bids?
Sometimes — only if the roof is a sound candidate. GoNano’s NuRoof treatments are not for every roof. An inspection should say repair, restore, or replace in plain language.
