Roof Repair, Restoration and Replacement in Weber County, Utah

Weber County stretches from the Ogden benches to the flats near the Great Salt Lake. Its weather and housing change a lot within a few miles.

A county of contrasts

QuickFacts puts Weber County at about 278,000 people (July 2025 estimate) on 576 square miles of land, around 455 people per square mile in 2020, with 74.1% of homes owner-occupied. The median home was built in 1984. By our arithmetic from Census table B25034, about one-third of the county’s housing units were built before 1980, about 14% before 1960, and about 30% since 2000, so the county mixes some of the oldest housing in northern Utah with newer growth areas.

Three Ogden-area stations, three different climates

NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals show how much weather changes within a short drive. Ogden Pioneer Park (about 4,350 feet) averages 21.6 inches of precipitation, with 117 days at or below 32°F and about 51 days at 90°F or more. Ogden Sugar Factory (about 4,280 feet) averages 18.8 inches, with about 128 freezing days and about 65 days at 90°F or more. Ogden-Hinckley Airport (about 4,470 feet) averages 16.4 inches, with about 121 freezing days and about 49 days at 90°F or more. A roof a few miles away can see noticeably different conditions, which is one reason we inspect the roof in front of us instead of generalizing.

Published design numbers differ by city

Ogden City lists a 43–50 psf ground snow load and a 115 or 120 mph design wind speed, with ice-barrier underlayment required. Roy City lists 40 psf and 120 mph. Both use a 30-inch frost depth. Utah State University’s ground snow load map is the tool both point to for specific addresses.

Canyon winds

The Utah Center for Climate and Weather describes easterly canyon winds that gust out of the canyon mouths along the Wasatch front and damage property in Cache, Weber, Davis, Salt Lake and Utah counties, with gusts of 103 mph recorded at Ogden on April 4, 1983. After any significant wind, look for lifted or missing shingles from the ground and have a professional inspect the rest.
