GoNano FAQ

GoNano Roof Treatment FAQ for Utah Homeowners

Straight answers about GoNano roof treatment from The NuRoof Guys, an authorized GoNano installer. Most of the test results below come from a white paper commissioned by GoNano, so we say what that paper says and mark our own interpretation as ours.

1. Is GoNano roof treatment worth it?

Short answer: It can be, for the right roof. It is meant for aging asphalt shingle roofs that are still structurally sound, and it is not right for every roof. An inspection is how you find out which group your roof is in.

The GoNano white paper says its subsurface treatment "is not a universal substitute for roof replacement" and that its effectiveness "depends on roof age, condition, and remaining structural integrity at the time of application" (p. 27). It also says that where shingles show advanced structural failure or extensive material loss, "replacement remains the appropriate intervention" (p. 27). Whether it is worth it for you depends on your roof's condition and on the price we quote after inspecting it, so we do not give a one-size answer. The NuRoof Guys will tell you plainly if your roof should be repaired or replaced instead. See also: https://www.nuroofutah.com/post/utah-roof-rejuvenation-candidate

2. How long does a GoNano roof treatment last?

Short answer: Nobody can honestly give you a proven number yet. GoNano's own white paper says long-term results are still being studied and that its service-life figure is a projection, not a guarantee.

The white paper says its projected service-life extension "is evaluated as a mechanistic estimate ... and should not be interpreted as a guaranteed lifespan extension under all service conditions, as long-term validation remains ongoing" (p. 4). Appendix H adds that the projection "is NOT a claim of proven performance" and that field monitoring so far covers 2–3 years (p. 36). The paper also says results depend on roof condition, application dosage, surface preparation, ambient conditions and curing (p. 25). Our interpretation: treat a treatment as a way to slow aging on a roof that is still sound, not as a promise of a specific number of years. For warranty terms see FAQ 14.

3. How much does GoNano roof treatment cost in Utah?

Short answer: GoNano restoration costs about a third of the cost of replacement. Your exact price depends on your roof's size, pitch, condition and access, so we quote in writing after a free inspection.

We don't publish dollar figures because every roof is different and the comparison only applies to roofs that qualify for restoration. To get a written quote, schedule a free inspection at https://thenuroofguys.dripjobs.com/appointmentrequests or call 385-383-8479.

4. Is GoNano treatment cheaper than replacing my roof?

Short answer: For a roof that qualifies, GoNano restoration costs about a third of the cost of replacement. Some roofs should be replaced instead.

We give you both numbers in writing after the inspection. The white paper describes full replacement as "a significant capital expense" and describes preservation as distributing costs "more evenly over time," while noting economic benefits "depend on verified performance retention" (p. 21, section 6.3). It also says the treatment does not "eliminate eventual replacement" (p. 26). Our interpretation: a treatment may help postpone replacement on a qualifying roof; it does not cancel it. A roof with leaks or major structural wear is usually not a candidate (see FAQ 6). 5. What is GoNano roof treatment and how does it work?

Short answer: It is a cold-applied, nano-engineered liquid treatment for aging asphalt shingles. It is designed to soak below the shingle surface instead of forming a film on top.

The GoNano white paper describes the system as "a cold-applied, nano-engineered treatment designed to penetrate below the shingle surface and interact within the asphalt binder matrix" (p. 4). The paper's explanation is that asphalt binder oxidizes and stiffens with age, which makes shingles more likely to crack and lose granules (pp. 9–10), and that the treatment is meant to address that aging inside the shingle. It reports lab results of reduced oxidation markers versus untreated, age-matched samples "under identical laboratory conditions" (p. 20). These are laboratory findings, not guarantees of how your roof will perform. The NuRoof Guys is an authorized GoNano installer and applies it as a licensed Utah roofing contractor.

6. Can an old shingle roof be restored instead of replaced?

Short answer: Sometimes. A roof that is aging but still sound may be a restoration candidate. A roof with advanced damage generally is not.

The white paper says treatment effectiveness depends on the roof's condition at application, and that "roofs exhibiting advanced structural damage, extensive granule loss, or compromised substrate integrity may fall outside the viable treatment window" (p. 25). It also says that once granule loss becomes severe, replacement is typically required (p. 10). In practice, a roof that is leaking, has widespread cracking or curling, or has granule loss down to the mat should be assessed for repair or replacement, not treatment. We decide this only after an in-person inspection, and we tell you honestly when the answer is "replace." See: https://www.nuroofutah.com/post/utah-roof-rejuvenation-candidate and https://www.nuroofutah.com/post/utah-asphalt-shingle-granule-loss

7. Is a roof coating better than replacing shingles?

Short answer: Not in every case, and "coating" covers different things. Surface coatings and GoNano-style subsurface treatments work differently, and neither replaces a roof that has failed.

The GoNano white paper says film-forming coatings (acrylic, silicone, elastomeric) are surface barriers that "do not address chemical or rheological degradation within the asphalt binder," and can peel, crack or trap moisture vapor, and "can affect flame spread" and fire classification under certain conditions (p. 12). That is GoNano's characterization of competing approaches, so read it as one manufacturer-commissioned view. The paper positions its own treatment as not forming a continuous external film (p. 12), and also says it is "not a universal substitute for roof replacement" (p. 27). Our view: if a roof is past repair, replacing it is the right call; if it is aging but sound, a treatment may help postpone replacement. 8. Does GoNano treatment make shingles more hail resistant?

Short answer: In one set of lab tests, yes, under tested conditions. It does not make a roof hail-proof, and your results on a real roof can differ.

According to the GoNano white paper, in UL 2218 testing (UL Project 4790134408, Dec 2021) aged Class 1 shingles treated with one coat reached Class 2–3 with no cracking or tearing, and with two coats reached Class 4 with no cracking, tearing or permanent deformation, "under the laboratory conditions and shingle types evaluated" (pp. 5, 30–31). The paper states findings "should be interpreted within the defined scope of the testing program rather than as absolute guarantees" (p. 24). Real hailstones vary in size, speed and angle, and the paper says labs cannot fully replicate field variability (p. 24). If you have had a hailstorm, a professional inspection is the right first step: https://www.nuroofutah.com/post/hail-damage-roof-inspection-layton-kaysville

9. Does GoNano treatment hurt my roof's wind or fire rating?

Short answer: According to GoNano's white paper, treated shingles kept their fire and wind test results in the lab. That applies to the specific tested setups, not automatically to every roof.

The paper reports that treated shingle assemblies "met UL 790 Class A acceptance criteria under the tested configurations" (UL Project 4790550987, Oct 2022; pp. 4–5, 29–30). For wind, treated panels passed ASTM D3161 testing (UL Project 4790686520, Mar 2023) for 120 minutes at measured speeds of 87–110 mph with no tab lift or adhesive failure, listed as "Pass – Class F/D" (p. 31, Table D1; five panels tested). The paper says its subsurface approach "preserves" the original roof system and surface characteristics, and contrasts this with surface films (pp. 4, 12, 23). Always check your local building requirements; ask your city or us about specifics.

10. Is GoNano treatment right for Utah's weather?

Short answer: Utah roofs deal with strong sun, temperature swings, freeze–thaw, wind and hail, which is what aging shingles struggle with. But no one has published Utah-specific field results for this treatment, so we say so plainly.

The white paper explains that aged asphalt becomes brittle and "more susceptible to cracking under thermal cycling," and may fail "during extreme temperature swings, particularly during cold snaps or rapid freeze–thaw cycles" (p. 10). It also says field results depend on UV intensity, thermal cycling, moisture and freeze–thaw frequency, and that multi-climate field monitoring is ongoing (p. 25). It does not report Utah-specific data. Our interpretation: Utah's climate is a reason to inspect aging roofs regularly, not proof that any treatment will perform a certain way here. 11. Does GoNano treatment remove moss or algae?

Short answer: The white paper we reviewed does not claim it does. Moss and algae are a separate issue that we assess during inspection.

The GoNano white paper focuses on asphalt binder aging, impact, wind, fire and chemistry, and does not evaluate moss or algae removal. We therefore make no claim that the treatment cleans or prevents either. If you see dark streaks or growth on your roof, do not climb up to check it; have a professional look. Read: https://www.nuroofutah.com/post/utah-roof-algae-moss-lichen

12. Will insurance cover roof treatment or restoration after a storm?

Short answer: We can't tell you what your policy covers. Ask your insurance agent or carrier, and have a roofing professional document the roof's condition.

Coverage depends on your policy, the cause of damage, roof age, and your insurer's rules, and The NuRoof Guys does not make coverage promises. The white paper says that for insurers, improved impact and wind test results "may inform underwriting considerations" (p. 27), and describes the treatment as being compatible with existing insurance underwriting frameworks "as evaluated within the scope of standardized testing" (p. 4). That is the paper's view, not a statement that any insurer will cover or discount it. Use this checklist before you call your insurer: https://www.nuroofutah.com/post/utah-homeowners-insurance-roof-checklist

13. What should I do if my Utah roof was damaged in a hail or wind storm?

Short answer: Stay off the roof, photograph what you can see safely from the ground, call your insurance agent, and book a professional inspection.

Do not go up on the roof yourself; wet, damaged or steep roofs are dangerous. From the ground, look for shingle pieces in the yard, dented gutters or downspouts, and water stains on ceilings inside. Then contact your insurer about your policy and claims process, and schedule an inspection so damage is documented. Tell the inspector about any recent storm date. The NuRoof Guys offers a free roof inspection and can tell you whether the roof needs repair, treatment or replacement. A leaking roof needs repair first; a treatment is not a leak repair (see FAQ 6). 14. Is there a warranty on GoNano treatment?

Short answer: Qualified roofs can get up to 15 years, backed by a GoNano warranty. Ask for the written terms to see whether your roof qualifies. The GoNano white paper itself is not a warranty.

The white paper's cover states: "This document does not constitute a warranty or guarantee of product performance" (p. 1), and it says outcomes "should be interpreted ... rather than as absolute guarantees under all service conditions" (p. 24). That means the lab results in this FAQ should not be read as promises. Whether a roof qualifies, what the warranty covers and excludes, and how a claim is made are set out in the written terms, so ask for them before you sign. Read our warranty explainer: https://www.nuroofutah.com/post/nuroof-gonano-warranty-what-homeowners-need-to-know — and always ask for warranty terms in writing before signing.

15. Is The NuRoof Guys licensed, and are you an authorized GoNano installer?

Short answer: Yes. The NuRoof Guys is a licensed Utah roofing contractor (license #14225732-5501) and an authorized GoNano installer.

You can verify any Utah contractor license through the State of Utah's Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) license lookup. We encourage you to do that for every contractor you consider, and to ask the questions in our guide: https://www.nuroofutah.com/post/utah-questions-ask-roofing-contractor. Contact: 385-383-8479, info@nuroofutah.com, https://www.nuroofutah.com.

16. Are there reviews of The NuRoof Guys or GoNano treatment in Utah?

Short answer: Ask us for references and look at independent review sites. We don't write or buy reviews, and we won't quote reviews here that we can't show you.

Public directory listings exist for The NuRoof Guys, and you can read them yourself. GoNano's own white paper states that field monitoring of treated roofs is 2–3 years and ongoing (p. 4, p. 36), so long-term homeowner outcomes are still being gathered. If you'd like to see completed local work, ask us when you schedule your free inspection: https://thenuroofguys.dripjobs.com/appointmentrequests.

17. How do I know whether to repair, restore, or replace my roof?

Short answer: The roof's condition decides, not the product. Repair fixes specific damage, restoration may suit an aging but sound roof, and replacement is for roofs past saving.

These are three different jobs. Repair is for local problems like a lifted flashing or a few damaged shingles. Restoration (GoNano's NuRoof treatments) may fit an aging shingle roof that is still structurally sound; the white paper says it sits "between routine maintenance and full replacement" and works within "defined age and condition windows" (pp. 23–24). Replacement is the answer when shingles have "advanced structural failure or extensive material loss" (p. 27) — in the paper's words, "replacement remains the appropriate intervention." Interpretation: if a roof leaks, has widespread cracking, curling or heavy granule loss, expect repair or replacement to be discussed first. A free inspection from The NuRoof Guys gives you a written recommendation. Read: https://www.nuroofutah.com/post/roof-replacement-or-rejuvenation-in-utah-which-option-is-best-for-homeowners

18. Do you serve my Utah city, and how do I get a free roof inspection?

Short answer: The NuRoof Guys serves homeowners across Utah, from St. George to the top of the state. Call 385-383-8479 or book online for a free roof inspection.
