Roof Repair, Restoration and Replacement in the Salt Lake Area
Salt Lake City is old, dense and shaken by the 2020 earthquake and windstorm. This is a service area for The NuRoof Guys, not an office.
Where we serve
The NuRoof Guys serve homeowners across Utah, from St. George to the top of the state. In the Salt Lake area, that includes Salt Lake City, Sandy, West Jordan, Draper and Murray. This is a service area; The NuRoof Guys do not have an office there. Call 385-383-8479 to see whether we can help with your address.
Salt Lake City’s housing is the oldest on this list
Census data (2020–2024) put the median Salt Lake City home at 1965. By our arithmetic from table B25034, about 54% of the city’s housing units were built before 1980, about 34% before 1960, and about 25% before 1940. Only about 46% of homes are owner-occupied (QuickFacts), so many roofs belong to landlords. The Salt Lake County median is 1986, so the older housing is concentrated in the city proper.
Two 2020 events every Salt Lake roofer remembers
The March 18, 2020 Magna earthquake. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations recorded a magnitude 5.7 quake and reported damage including fallen chimneys, and the Utah Geological Survey notes it caused moderate building damage along the Wasatch Front. Chimneys and the flashing around them are a roof matter, which is one reason an inspection after a quake looks above the roofline as well as below.
The September 8, 2020 windstorm. NOAA’s Storm Events database records a historic downslope wind event in the Salt Lake Valley with a peak gust of 89 mph at the University of Utah, 77 mph at Salt Lake City International Airport, widespread downed trees, and more than 180,000 power outages along the Wasatch Front. See our extreme-weather roof protection and insurance help in Northern Utah for how we think about storm roofs.
Climate and codes
NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for Salt Lake City International Airport record about 15.5 inches of precipitation and 51.9 inches of snow a year, lows at or below 32°F on about 112 days, and highs of 90°F or more on about 62 days (about 7.6 days at 100°F or more). Salt Lake City’s Building Services design criteria call for a minimum ground snow load of 28 psf at or below 4,239 feet and direct higher elevations to Utah State University’s map, a 115 mph residential design wind speed, and a 30-inch frost depth. Higher foothill and bench addresses fall under the state map instead, so ask which figure applies to yours.
Repair, restore, replace
In an older housing stock the first step is a look at the roof and what is under it. Repair handles specific failures. GoNano restoration may suit an aging asphalt roof that is still structurally sound; it is not a repair for storm damage and not right for every roof. Replacement is for roofs past repair. Start with our Utah homeowners insurance roof checklist if storm damage is involved.
